Futureworld
For the first major motion graphics project in second year, myself and two others set ourselves a brief of revamping an old title sequence of a film. We weighed up several choices, looking at films which had interesting stories and themes but whose title sequences were lacking by today's standards. We nominated 1976's 'Futureworld'; a film set before the now popular HBO series 'Westworld'. The film is about doppelganger robots which replace figures of notable power on this island resort.
We honed in on one particular scene from the film, where the robots are being constructed and information from the original people are being injected into the copies. I came up with the idea of replicating that scene but in a new way, so we have this continuous motion where the bodies are not fully revealed, as to maintain a sense of mystery which can lead to a sudden realisation when the audience understands the story later on. We split the tasks, so I headed up the UI animation on the monitors, utilising a retro style in keeping
with the original film. We came up with a variety of displays, each with a different pseudo-scientific purpose and then incorporated actor's names into the interfaces. Going into the planning of this, we had to carefully work out how long each screen would be viewed, so that the names could be 'revealed' as the camera moved past the monitors.
Below are the final storyboards going into animating the sequence, showing the 3D scene and the displays separately to help us make sense of things.
